On-the-spot, spot-on collaboration

October 31st, 2008 · No Comments

So, we’ve taken a number of field trips over the past year to learn about coffee roasters and meet potential vendors at the farmers’ market and check out the chickens that’ll be laying our fresh eggs for the café. The latest trip was a little jaunt out west on 290, in the Oak Hill area, [...]

Introducing the Sky Room

October 30th, 2008 · 1 Comment

The public cafe area at LaunchPad Coworking is an atrium 3 stories high. The ceiling is all skylights, making for really lovely natural light throughout.
We decided to take advantage of all that space by cantilevering a 6th meeting room over the cafe. What you’re seeing here is the framework for the Sky Room. It’s small [...]

October 27th, 2008 · 2 Comments

On a recent, lovely Sunday afternoon, Julie, Michael, Tina and I headed out to Bastrop to visit our friends, Sue Beckwith and Jules Assata, owners of Shades of Green Farm. Julie and I have known Sue just this side of forever through high-tech ventures. These days Sue and Jules are in the chicken business, raising [...]

Telecommuting + Productivity: Is it Working?

October 24th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I spoke at InnoTech last week — it’s always good to have a chance to spread the coworking word. Overall the gathering was okay — not great but okay. I prefer the more geeky BarCamp and similar events and InnoTech was pretty heavy on the suits. That said, telecommuters were well represented and seemed very [...]

Time for another Venn Diagram: Job hunting & coworking

October 21st, 2008 · 1 Comment

I’m such a fan of the Venn Diagram that I think my friends get sick of me citing this handy illustration of overlap. But you know, if something lends itself well to the discussion I’m all in favor of trotting out the device repeatedly. That said, let’s take a look at my latest cross section, [...]

Call for slaw!

October 20th, 2008 · 3 Comments

So we started working on menu ideas nearly a year ago. We’ve had tastings and brainstorming sessions. We’ve ruled items in and we’ve ruled them out. And the one thing that’s continually stumping our panel is COLESLAW.
Now, we’re sure we want coleslaw on the menu, so that’s not the issue. But we have yet to [...]

Austin bike rack FAIL

October 18th, 2008 · 2 Comments

One of the upsides of the ridiculous prices of gas is that more people are riding bikes. Unfortunately, there aren’t enough places to park them.
I found this makeshift bike rack right around the corner from LaunchPad Coworking. We’re working with the city to get more proper racks installed.
Update: This email came from the City of [...]

When is a Telecommuter not a Telecommuter?

October 17th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Possibly soon. Plantronics is sponsoring a contest in an attempt to coin a new phrase to replace the word “telecommuter”. The contest runs until October 24, 2008, so if you want to enter, no slacking.
Actually, if you go to the rules page, you’ll see they are officially trying to replace the word “teleworker”, however when [...]
