News Flash: FOX News is unaware of Julie’s voting record

July 24th, 2008 · Posted by Spike Gillespie

Fox News LogoJulie had some big news at our weekly meeting Tuesday. Douglas Kennedy (yes one of those Kennedys), who works for Fox News, invited her for an interview about coworking. So she and Susan Price of Firecat Studio headed to the Fox Studios in Dallas. The segment airs Friday, July 25, 4 pm central on Fox National News. I wanted a little sneak peek, behind the scenes, insider type info from Julie, so I conducted a quick Q & A.

Spike Gillespie: First of all, you woke up on time to catch your 6:30 am flight?
Julie Gomoll:
I did! Although I probably hit the snooze alarm once more than I should have…

Spike: Did they give you any ideas on how to prep, any hints at what they’d be asking?
Julie:
Nope. I wasn’t sure if it was about LaunchPad Coworking, or coworking in general, but I figured I’d be ready either way.

Spike: Did you do any extra prep on your side or can you just walk into these things with your existing knowledge and go go go?
Julie:
Mostly I just go for it with interviews.  If I start to plan or (even worse) memorize stuff, I sound really stiff. Susan and I did review Omar Gallaga’s article in the Statesman ahead of time, since that’s what gave them the story idea.

Spike: Was there one of those huge powder puff things and did someone yell MAKEUP and did they rush in and hit you in the face with the powder puff?
Julie:
Not a bit! I was kind of surprised, actually. Not even dabs to potential shiny spots.

Spike: What was it like hobnobbing with a Kennedy? Are you going to Martha’s Vineyard anytime soon?
Julie:
Sorry, that’s classified.

Spike: No really, what was the actual interview like? Was there a human in the room interviewing you or did questions get fed into some earphone thingy?
Julie:
Earphone thingy. We were supposed to tape in the Dallas Bureau for the national news, but we got bumped to the local affiliate studio at the last minute. So I got the questions in my ear and answered them while staring into a blank screen with a blank teleprompter below it.

Spike: How did it feel when you were actually taping? Were you nervous?
Julie:
I wasn’t at all, actually, which surprised me. I attribute that to 1) having Susan there, which was very grounding and really great for my confidence and 2) I’m just so comfortable talking about this — and I really enjoy talking about it. It’s been a long time since anyone has stumped me on a coworking question.

Spike: What was the coolest part of the interview?
Julie:
The coolest part was at the end, when Douglas Kennedy started complimenting me. “You’re fabulous!” he said. “Really, you have no idea… you hit all the points — you’re like a sound bite waiting to happen!” I’m not sure, but I may have blushed.

Spike: I don’t want you to give anything away but… can you give us a hint of what to expect on Friday?
Julie:
I don’t really know. We taped for only 10 minutes or so. I’m assuming it’ll be edited down to a few minutes of human interest at the end of the news broadcast, but nobody at the local affiliate knew what it would turn into. We’ll be having a viewing party at my house :)
