It’s a big deal when the New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle both cover coworking.
Coworking pioneers, including Hat Factory, Citizen Space, Sandbox Suites and Werks (sorry Werks people — couldn’t find a decent link to you. — send me one and I’ll fix this post) got some much-deserved press over the last couple of days. The main NYT article was “They’re Working On Their Own, Just Side By Side”, and included a sidebar entitled “Inspiration Strikes Only a Desk Away.” These showed up online on Feb. 19th and in print the following day. The San Francisco Chronicle also did a story — “Shared work spaces a wave of the future”.
Coworking is clearly gaining some serious momentum. Is this fun or what?
Remember: all the cool kids who are into coworking will be at the truly fabulous San Jose Hotel for the Coworking Meetup :) Coming just for BarCamp? No worries - this is happening on the first official SXSWi night, but you don’t need a membership to join us.

We really need to talk. I’m working on getting a recovery coworking environment going in New Orleans. I want to introduce the coworking concept to people who are working on the recovery as their second job (which is everyone I know).
The nonprofit arena talks about “building capacity” of neighborhood “activists”. I believe that we’ve all taken on a second career as full-time professional citizens. We need the trappings of professionals, not “activists”.
We’re writing grants, ordinances, and lobbying for legislation, plus our day jobs. The flexibility of coworking seems to be a good fit, and the practitioners of coworking, solo knowledge workers have a lot of other tricks to teach us as well.

Mark - coworking is all over Twitter. Or perhaps Twitter is all over coworking. Set up an alert. You’ll see :)

Alan again - there are lots of flavors of coworking. Which work for you?
You’re right - there’s a lot of potential synergy here. We no doubt have tricks to teach each other.
I’m thinking maybe you have an idea brewing… do tell :)
