BarCamp is Coming! BarCamp is Coming!

BarCamp Texas in Bryan - posterLast fall, I went to the grand opening of The Creative Space, a new coworking space in Bryan, TX, near College Station. Bryan (admittedly, much to my surprise) is turning into a very cool little tech hub. A number of innovators, developers, and entrepreneurs are transforming the downtown area. Among these is Cody Marx Bailey, whom I got a chance to meet at the opening. Great guy.

Now Bryan is about to get another feather in its tech hat. January 26th and 27th the town is hosting BarCamp Texas.

And just what is BarCamp? BarCamp began as an alternative to Tim O’Reilley’s tech conferences, which are pricey, invitation-only affairs. BarCamps are free, ad hoc gatherings of tech people who want to share ideas and learn from each other. It’s a sort of real time, open source affair where participants decide what topics will be covered. Anyone can participate. And BarCamps happen all over the place.

I’m always happy to see BarCamps convening. But I’m especially happy that this one is occurring not just in Texas, but in a place where attendees will have a chance to see coworking in practice and help spread the idea.
