Happy New Year!
I predict that 2008 will be the year of Coworking. Well, it’ll be the year of coworking in Austin, TX, anyway. It’s not like I’m going out on a limb here or anything, since LaunchPad Coworking is opening this spring. Admittedly, this is an unabashed plug for us, but it’s more than that, I promise.
Coworking spaces have been springing up all over the world at a rapid rate, and the general concept seems about to take off. The national press has noticed. Business Week and Fortune/CNN Money have both run stories about coworking.
Citizen Space, the Hat Factory, Independents Hall, CubeSpace, Office Nomads, CooperBricolage and loads of other coworking locations have all got their share of press this year and done their part to promote the idea of coworking.
And while we’re doing things a bit differently at LaunchPad Coworking than most, we’re thrilled to be a part of this burgeoning movement.
One-third of the U.S. workforce is employed independently as freelancers, consultants, temps, part-timers, and self-employed workers. They/we need more options than home, coffee shops, hotel rooms, and sterile executive suites. Coworking is the answer, and the fact that there are so many different models out there means there are that many more options for mobile workers.
So here’s wishing all the mobile workers and all the coworking spaces out there a productive and prosperous 2008. Play hard. Work smart. Build great stuff :)

I like that we’re doing it differently. And I agree that this is going to take off. It’s so funny to me that so many of us “fought” for the freedom to work at home and then, when we got here, found home to have plenty of challenges, too. I still say the trade-off– an office for working in my pajamas– was worth it. But I’m eager to work around other people. Plus, I don’t have tapenade on hand regularly, but I’m crossing my fingers that this will show up on the menu of regular items. And I look forward to handing my accountant a pile of receipts from LaunchPad Coworking that I can actually write off on my taxes.
